How to Become a Driving Instructor in the UK
Becoming a driving instructor is a rewarding and flexible career — you get to help people achieve independence, build confidence, and gain a skill that lasts a lifetime.
At Pro Drivers Academy, we don’t just train learners — we can also guide you on the journey to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
Before applying, make sure you meet the DVSA’s requirements:
You must be over 21 years old.
You must have held a full UK (or EU/EEA) driving licence for at least 3 years.
You must not have more than 6 penalty points on your licence.
You must be able to read a number plate from 90 feet (27.5 metres).
You must be a “fit and proper” person — the DVSA will check your background and criminal record.
Apply directly through the DVSA to begin the process.
They’ll carry out background checks and confirm your eligibility.

There are three parts to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI):
Similar to the learner theory test but more advanced.
Includes multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips.
Tests your knowledge of driving techniques, teaching methods, and the Highway Code.
An advanced driving test lasting around 1 hour.
Includes:
Eyesight check
“Show me, tell me” questions
High-standard driving across various road types
Manoeuvres
Only a small number of minor faults are allowed.
You’ll give a 45-minute driving lesson to a real learner while a DVSA examiner observes.
You’ll be assessed on how well you plan, communicate, and adapt your teaching.
Most people take professional instructor training to prepare for these exams.
At Pro Drivers Academy, we can guide you through the process or recommend DVSA-approved training providers to help you pass Parts 1–3 with confidence.
Once you’ve passed all three parts, you can join the official DVSA register of Approved Driving Instructors.
You’ll need to pay the ADI registration fee (valid for 4 years).
After that — congratulations! You’re officially qualified and can start teaching learners.
