Preparing for the ADI Part 2 Driving Ability Test

The Part 2 Driving Ability Test is designed to ensure you can drive to an exceptionally high standard before you teach others. Think of it as an advanced driving test.

1. What the Part 2 Test Involves

•Length: About 1 hour.

•Includes:

1.Eyesight test (read a number plate at 27.5 metres).

2.Vehicle safety questions (‘Show Me, Tell Me’).

3.General driving ability — you’ll be assessed on:

•Use of mirrors, signals, and positioning

•Anticipation and planning

•Junctions, roundabouts, and dual carriageways

•Progress and speed control

•Independent driving section (using sat-nav or road signs)

4.Manoeuvres — you’ll be asked to carry out two manoeuvres:

•Reverse parallel park

•Reverse into a parking bay

•Drive into a bay and reverse out

•Pull up on the right-hand side, reverse, and rejoin traffic

5.Emergency stop (in most tests).

•Pass Criteria:

•No more than 6 driving faults (minors).

•No serious or dangerous faults.

2. How to Prepare

•Practise advanced observation and anticipation — examiners expect higher standards than the learner test.

•Focus on smoothness, control, and professionalism.

•Practise all manoeuvres until they’re natural.

•Do mock tests with an ADI trainer.

•Consider an advanced driving course (RoSPA or IAM) to sharpen your skills.

3. Cost and Booking

•Cost (as of May 2025): £111

•Book via: GOV.UK – ADI Part 2 Driving Ability

4. Next Steps
