Preparing for the ADI Part 1 Theory Test
The first step to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is passing the Part 1 Theory Test. This is more advanced than the standard learner theory test, as it checks both your driving knowledge and your ability to teach.
⸻
1. What the Part 1 Test Involves
•Multiple-Choice Questions
•100 questions in total.
•Split across 4 key areas of knowledge:
1.Road procedure
2.Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge
3.Driving test, disabilities, law
4.Teaching techniques and instructional methods
•Pass mark: 85 out of 100 overall, AND at least 20 out of 25 in each category.
•Hazard Perception
•14 video clips (just like the learner hazard perception test).
•Each clip contains at least 1 developing hazard; 1 clip contains 2 hazards.
•Pass mark: 57 out of 75.
⸻
2. How to Prepare
•Study the Highway Code thoroughly — you’ll be tested in far more depth than learners.
•Use the DVSA Official ADI Theory Test Kit (apps, books, and practice tests).
•Practise hazard perception clips regularly.
•Focus on instructional techniques — this is unique to the ADI test.
•Take timed mock tests to simulate real exam pressure.
