Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Pro Drivers Academy
Everything You Need to Know About Learning to Drive in Chingford and North East London
At Pro Drivers Academy, we understand that starting your driving journey is both exciting and nerve-wracking — and it often comes with lots of questions. Below, you’ll find detailed answers to the most common questions we receive about lessons, instructors, tests, and training options in Chingford and across North East London.
Starting Your Driving Journey
1. When can I start driving lessons?
You can begin learning to drive from your 17th birthday, provided you hold a valid provisional driving licence. If you’re receiving certain disability benefits, you may be eligible to start at 16. As soon as your provisional licence arrives, you can book your first lesson and get behind the wheel with one of our DVSA-approved instructors.
2. How do I apply for a provisional licence?
Applying is simple — you can complete the application online via the official GOV.UK website or by picking up a D1 form at most Post Offices. You’ll need proof of identity, an up-to-date passport photo, and a small application fee. Most licences arrive within a couple of weeks.
3. Do I need to pass the theory test before starting lessons?
Not at all. You can begin practical lessons before you pass the theory test, which often helps you understand road situations better while studying. However, you’ll need to pass the theory before booking your practical driving test. Many of our learners prepare for both at the same time for a smoother learning experience.
4. What documents do I need for my first lesson?
For your first session, please bring your provisional driving licence so your instructor can verify it. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure you have them, as you’ll be asked to read a number plate to check your eyesight. We also recommend wearing comfortable, flat-soled shoes to help you feel the pedals properly.
5. What happens in my very first driving lesson?
Your first lesson focuses on building confidence. Your instructor will introduce you to the car’s main controls, explain basic driving principles, and help you move off, steer, and stop safely in a quiet area. By the end, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to handle the car and what to expect in future lessons.
Lessons & Learning
6. How many driving lessons will I need to pass?
Every learner is different. On average, most people need around 45 hours of professional lessons plus additional private practice to become test-ready. Your instructor will monitor your progress and adjust lessons to your pace so you can build confidence and skill efficiently.
7. How often should I take lessons?
Consistency is key. We recommend at least one two-hour session each week, but learners who take two lessons weekly often progress faster and retain information better. Regular practice between sessions also helps develop smoother coordination and control.
8. Do you offer manual and automatic driving lessons?
Yes, we offer both. You can choose manual if you’d like the flexibility to drive any vehicle after passing, or automatic if you prefer a simpler, less stressful experience. Your instructor can help you decide which option suits your learning style best.
9. Can I switch between manual and automatic during training?
Absolutely. Many learners start with manual lessons and later switch to automatic, or vice versa. Our team makes it easy to transfer between instructors and cars so you can continue learning without interruption.
10. Do you offer female driving instructors?
Yes — we have highly qualified female instructors available. Some learners find they feel more relaxed and confident learning with a female instructor, and we’re happy to accommodate your preference when booking.
11. Do you offer block booking packages?
Yes. Block bookings are a great way to secure your preferred lesson times and plan your progress in advance. They also provide peace of mind knowing your schedule is set, especially during busy periods.
12. Do you offer refresher lessons?
Yes, we do. Refresher lessons are ideal if you haven’t driven for a while, recently moved to the UK, or simply want to polish specific skills like parking, roundabouts, or motorway driving. Lessons are tailored to your experience level and goals.
13. Do you teach motorway driving?
Yes — once your instructor feels you’ve reached a safe level, you can learn motorway driving under their supervision. These lessons teach lane discipline, merging, overtaking, and handling high-speed traffic safely. Motorway training is also included in our Pass Plus course.
14. Do you offer evening or weekend lessons?
Yes. We understand learners have different schedules, so we offer flexible lesson times including evenings and weekends. Availability depends on your instructor, so it’s best to book ahead.
15. How long are your lessons?
Our standard lessons are two hours long, which allows enough time to practice, review, and reinforce skills without feeling rushed. This duration also helps you cover more ground and make steady progress each week.
Driving Tests
16. How do I book my theory test?
You can easily book your theory test online at GOV.UK. Choose a nearby test centre, select a date, and pay the test fee. We recommend booking early as test centres in London can fill up quickly.
17. How long is the theory test valid for?
Your theory test certificate remains valid for two years. You’ll need to pass your practical test within that period, or you’ll have to retake the theory before rebooking your practical.
18. What are the “show me, tell me” questions?
These are safety-based questions asked by the examiner during your practical test. “Tell me” questions are asked before you start driving (e.g., how you’d check tyres). “Show me” questions happen while you’re driving (e.g., how to wash the windscreen). Your instructor will help you practise all possible questions beforehand.
19. How do I book my practical driving test?
Once your instructor confirms you’re ready, you can book online at GOV.UK. You’ll need your provisional licence number, your theory test pass number, and a payment card. We can also help you find earlier test dates if needed.
20. Can I use my own car for the driving test?
Yes, provided it meets DVSA safety requirements — it must be roadworthy, fully insured, taxed, display L-plates, and have an extra interior mirror for the examiner. Most learners use their instructor’s car, as it’s dual-controlled and familiar.
21. What if I fail my driving test?
Don’t worry — it’s very common. You’ll receive a detailed feedback sheet from your examiner highlighting areas for improvement. With a few focused lessons, you’ll be ready to rebook your next test after the mandatory 10 working days.
22. What is a mock test?
A mock test is a full simulation of the real driving test, conducted by your instructor. It helps you experience test conditions, time pressure, and examiner-style instructions. Afterward, your instructor will provide feedback on where you did well and what needs work.
23. Should I take a mock test before my real one?
Definitely. Mock tests are a great way to prepare mentally and practically. They help reduce nerves, build familiarity with the process, and ensure you’re genuinely ready for the real thing.
Courses & Advanced Training
24. What is an intensive driving course?
An intensive driving course is designed to help you learn quickly — usually over 1–3 weeks. You’ll have lessons almost daily, covering all the same content as regular lessons but in a condensed timeframe. It’s ideal for learners who want to pass fast or have limited time.
25. Who is an intensive course suitable for?
It’s perfect for those who can dedicate time to daily lessons and want to progress quickly, such as students on break or individuals needing a licence for work. Your instructor will assess your ability to ensure you’re ready for the pace.
26. What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a government-approved advanced driving course taken after you pass your test. It consists of six modules covering motorway, night, rural, dual carriageway, town, and all-weather driving. It helps new drivers gain confidence in different environments.
27. Does Pass Plus lower insurance?
Yes — many insurance companies offer discounts for completing Pass Plus because it shows you’ve taken extra training to be a safer driver. The savings can often offset the cost of the course itself.
28. How much is Pass Plus?
Our Pass Plus course costs £250 for approximately 6 hours of training (split into about three sessions). It’s a worthwhile investment for improving your confidence and safety as a newly qualified driver.
29. Do you offer refresher driving lessons?
Yes. Our refresher lessons are designed for full licence holders who want to rebuild confidence, adjust to UK roads, or improve particular skills. Each session is completely tailored to your experience level and objectives.
30. Can I take lessons if I’ve already passed but want to improve?
Of course. Many qualified drivers take extra lessons to feel more comfortable with motorway driving, parking, or city traffic. We offer both refresher lessons and Pass Plus courses for this purpose.
Costs & Bookings
31. How much are your driving lessons?
Our lessons cost £70 for a two-hour session, whether you choose manual or automatic. This price includes full instruction, car use, and insurance during your lessons.
32. Do you charge extra for weekends?
No — our prices remain the same seven days a week. We believe in fair, transparent pricing with no hidden weekend surcharges.
33. Do you offer discounts?
We don’t offer discounts on individual lesson prices, but block bookings allow you to plan your training in advance and secure preferred time slots, which can be especially helpful during peak periods.
34. Do I have to pay for lessons upfront?
You can either pay as you go after each lesson or book and pay for a block in advance. Many learners prefer block bookings for convenience and guaranteed scheduling.
35. How do I cancel or reschedule a lesson?
We understand plans can change. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give us at least 24–48 hours’ notice to avoid cancellation charges. This allows us to offer the slot to another learner.
Confidence & Safety
36. What if I’m nervous about driving?
Feeling nervous is completely normal — especially at the beginning. Our instructors are patient, understanding, and trained to support anxious learners. Lessons are structured gradually so your confidence builds naturally with every drive.
37. What if I stall the car?
Don’t worry! Stalling happens to almost everyone when learning manual. Your instructor will calmly guide you through clutch control until you can start smoothly every time. It’s simply part of the learning process.
38. Do you teach defensive driving?
Yes — defensive driving is a key part of our training. We teach you how to anticipate hazards, read other drivers’ behaviour, and stay safe in unpredictable traffic situations. These skills help you become a confident, responsible driver.
39. Are your cars modern and safe?
Yes. All our cars are modern, dual-controlled, and fully maintained for safety and comfort. They’re equipped with the latest safety features, ensuring you learn in a reliable, secure environment.
40. Are your instructors DVSA approved?
Absolutely. Every instructor at Pro Drivers Academy is a DVSA-approved driving instructor (ADI). This means they’ve passed rigorous training and testing to meet national teaching standards.
